Cardinals rest Michael Wacha as innings begin to pile up

MLB, St. Louis Cardinals

ST. LOUIS -- Tyler Lyons was recalled from Triple-A Memphis to start in place of Michael Wacha for the St. Louis Cardinals against the Washington Nationals.

The National League Central leaders optioned Marco Gonzales, who lasted 2⅔ innings in a spot start in place of Carlos Martinez on Monday, back to Triple-A Memphis before Wednesday night's game.

The 24-year-old Wacha, 15-4 with a 2.69 ERA, is getting a rest much like Martinez the previous evening, manager Mike Matheny said. The Cardinals are trying to monitor the workload for their young pitching standouts.

St. Louis also recalled left-hander Nick Greenwood and right-hander Miguel Socolovich from Memphis.

The 27-year-old Lyons will be making his seventh start for St. Louis this season in his fifth stint with the team. In his most recent recall, Lyons worked three scoreless relief appearances, including 5⅓ innings Aug. 13 against Pittsburgh.

Socolovich was 4-1 with a 1.54 ERA with St. Louis earlier this season.
