Phillies RHP Charlie Morton out 6-8 months with torn left hamstring

MLB, Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Charlie Morton will have surgery on his left hamstring on Monday and is expected to miss 6 to 8 months, the team announced.

An MRI revealed that Morton tore his left hamstring when running down the first-base line on a sacrifice bunt attempt against Milwaukee on April 23.

"I feel bad for Charlie. Great guy. I feel bad for him and for us," Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said before Wednesday's game against Washington. "He was starting to throw really well. It's a shame.

"It was just one of those freak accidents."

Morton, 32, is 1-1 with a 4.15 ERA and 19 strikeouts in four starts with the Phillies this season.

Morton was acquired by the Phillies in December from the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is in the final year of a three-year, $21 million contract. The Phillies have a club option for Morton in 2017. He will make $8 million this season.
