Cubs' Kris Bryant likely to avoid DL after rolling ankle

MLB, Chicago Cubs

Chicago Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant has a mild ankle sprain and is not expected to go on the DL, the team announced Friday.

An MRI confirmed that Bryant avoided a serious injury when he rolled his ankle while rounding the bases in Thursday's 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Bryant, the reigning NL Rookie of the Year, was not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Atlanta Braves, but manager Joe Maddon said he might be available off the bench late in the game.

"I think if we just rest him a little bit right now and aren't really abusing it right now, it should go away relatively fast," Maddon said Friday. "The thing with sprained ankles is to not re-jam it somehow. That's the problem with an ankle. He could be feeling fine after a week or two weeks, and then you hit it wrong and feel it."

Bryant is hitting .289 with a .372 on-base percentage, four home runs and 15 RBIs this season.

Javier Baez started at third base Friday in the series opener at Wrigley Field.
