Indians acquire catcher Chris Gimenez from Rangers

CLEVELAND -- The Indians acquired backup catcher Chris Gimenez from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations.

Cleveland was in need of another experienced catcher after Roberto Perez injured his right thumb last weekend making a tag in Philadelphia and was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

This will be the 33-year-old Gimenez's third stint with Cleveland. He was a 19th-round draft choice in 2004. Gimnez spent last season with Texas, batting .255 with five homers and 14 RBIs in 36 games. Gimenez made 18 of those starts in September and October and played in two playoff games against Toronto.

He began this season on the disabled list with an infection in his left ankle. He was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Tuesday.

To make space on the 40-man roster, the Indians designated catcher Adam Moore for assignment.
