The Los Angeles Dodgers have suspended minor league shortstop Erisbel Arruebarrena for the remainder of the season, marking the second consecutive year they have done so.
The Dodgers confirmed the suspension Wednesday for the Double-A infielder, though they declined to reveal specifics for their course of action.
"We have suspended Erisbel for the remainder of the season for his repeated failure to comply with the terms of his contract," Dodgers director of player development Gabe Kapler said Wednesday.
In May of last season, the 26-year-old Arruebarrena was also suspended for the year, for essentially the same reason. That suspension, however, was reduced to 30 days after an appeal.
The new suspension is without pay for the infielder, who was set to make $4 million this year on the $25 million deal he agreed to in 2014 after leaving Cuba. He even played 22 games with the Dodgers in 2014, batting .195 with a .224 on-base percentage.
His stock has since fallen sharply. Not only was he not invited to big league camp in spring training this year, but he also never even saw time in Cactus League games while other prospects were given sporadic opportunities.
Arruebarrena batted .299 with a .337 on-base percentage and a .418 slugging percentage at Double-A Tulsa last season. In 17 games this year, he was batting .182 and had struck out 21 times in 55 at-bats.
