Andrew Benintendi wasn't candidate to replace Chris Young, Red Sox say

The Boston Red Sox have placed Chris Young on the disabled list and have recalled outfielder Bryce Brentz from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Brentz was available for Friday night's game at Texas.

Young left Thursday's 8-7 win over the Chicago White Sox with a strained right hamstring suffered while running the bases.

Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said top prospect Andrew Benintendi wasn't a candidate to be called up from Double-A Portland.

As a matter of course, Dombrowski isn't opposed to promoting players directly from Double-A, but the Red Sox don't believe Benintendi is ready from an offensive standpoint, having gotten less than 500 at-bats in the minors since being drafted in the first round last June.

"We didn't even talk about him in relation to this move, per se," Dombrowski said. "We just don't think he's ready, and we wouldn't want to bring him up here until he's ready."

Young is the Red Sox's third starting left fielder to get hurt this season.

The Red Sox's other injured left fielders, Brock Holt (concussion) and Blake Swihart (ankle sprain), are working their way back.

Dombrowski said the Red Sox might have preferred a left-handed-hitting outfielder, but with their depth being tested by injuries, Brentz was the best available option at Triple-A.

Brentz's stay on the roster might not be long. Holt will continue his Triple-A rehab assignment through the weekend, and in the best-case scenario, he could rejoin the Red Sox next week against Tampa Bay. Until then, Brentz will get the majority of the starts in left field, with Ryan LaMarre possibly seeing some time as a late-game defensive replacement, according to manager John Farrell.

"You see a lot of times somebody goes down and someone gets an opportunity and makes the most of it," Brentz said. "I hate for CY [to get hurt]. Wish him a quick recovery. Right now, I'm just trying to step in, help out, contribute and hopefully we can get some wins."
