Arrieta's HBP leads to wild scene

Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates

The Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates were fighting for postseason survival during Wednesday's National League wild-card game. But they nearly tried to settle matters with their fists after Pirates reliever Tony Watson hit Cubs starter Jake Arrieta with a pitch in the top of the seventh inning.

The plunking was likely a result of Arrieta hitting two Pirates batters earlier in the game -- catcher Francisco Cervelli in the fifth inning with a pitch that was up and in, and infielder Josh Harrison in the sixth inning on a wayward breaking ball. Plus, the Pirates were down 4-0 against Arrieta, who had dominated them through six innings. And there could have been some lingering bad blood from a game on Sept. 17, when the Cubs' Chris Coghlan, in an effort to break up a double play, slid hard into Pirates shortstop Jung Ho Kang, who suffered a season-ending knee injury.

Regardless, here are some photos that help illustrate what happened at PNC Park on Wednesday night:
