1. If you're looking for early evidence of who made the best coaching hire, focus on what Jeremy Pruitt's Georgia defense did to Clemson in the second half of the Dawgs' 45-21 victory. In seven second-half possessions, the Tigers had six three-and-outs and one four-play drive on which they made their only first down of the half. That's 22 plays, 15 total yards and an average of third-and-11. Georgia, meanwhile, ran 41 plays for 321 yards and scored four touchdowns. Coach Mark Richt just might have made the best coaching hire.

2. What Miami and Louisville lacked in execution they made up for with tension. Canes quarterback Brad Kaaya, two days before his 19th birthday, showed the poise that won him the starting job as a true freshman. That's not to say he played well. You can pin two turnovers, one in the red zone, on Kaaya. The offensive line didn't offer much protection, but Kaaya didn't throw up on himself in an ACC game on the road before an amped crowd. That's a start.

3. Texas quarterback David Ash's career is up to the doctors. A concussion earned him a medical redshirt last season and he missed 10 games. The same thing might have happened on the first hit he took this season. Ash joins Garrett Gilbert and Case McCoy as quarterbacks who didn't meet the standards set by Case's brother Colt and Vince Young. If Ash is done, he'll be remembered as the guy who played quarterback at Texas while fellow Texans Robert Griffin III, Andrew Luck and Johnny Manziel played elsewhere. That's no legacy, but injuries prevented a better outcome.

The big day and even bigger night had been nearly two years in the making, so much work and effort placed on an event many thought would never come.

Louisville would make its debut as an ACC member on national television against five-time national champion Miami in prime time on Monday night.

But before that, preparations were well underway to put the finishing touches on the monumental occasion.

AUSTIN, Texas -- Thirteen months ago, David Ash had a vision for how this would someday play out.

At Big 12 media days in July 2013, Ash was asked about his relationship with Tyrone Swoopes, the freshman who'd enrolled early and was battling to become his backup. He talked about Texas' proud history at the quarterback position -- Vince Young, Colt McCoy, even mentioned Major Applewhite. Then, he reflected on what he wanted to leave behind when his playing days at Texas were over.

"Coming in, Texas kind of took a nosedive for a year, and we've been trying to get back up," he said. "With Tyrone, my goal is that, whenever he steps in, I've got the program where he can just keep it rolling and Texas can be good for a long time."

The passing of the torch wasn't supposed to go down like this.
