Martin Prado done for season

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Martin Prado's season is over after the New York Yankees' utilityman underwent an appendectomy Tuesday morning, the team announced.

The Yankees acquired Prado at the trade deadline from Arizona for minor leaguer Peter O'Brien. In 37 games, Prado hit .316 with seven homers and 16 RBIs.

Prado played in Monday's night game, despite not feeling well.

"He had a stomachache all day," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said.

Girardi said the appendix did not burst.

Prado is signed through next year, in which he will be paid $11 million. The Yankees placed him on the 60-day disabled list and signed minor leaguer Jose Pirela.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Prado, 30, should be fine for next season.

New York entered Tuesday six games behind Oakland and Kansas City in the AL wild-card standings.
