Sandy Alderson extension in works

NEW YORK -- Not only do the Mets plan to pick up their 2015 option on general manager Sandy Alderson, they are making progress toward announcing a multiyear extension after the regular season concludes, a source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com.

Alderson, who was hired on Oct. 29, 2010, is completing the final guaranteed season of an original four-year deal. The Mets already intended to announce after the season the retention of Alderson and manager Terry Collins for next season.

The Mets are 301-341 (.469) in four seasons under Alderson and Collins. They will need to win five of their remaining six games in order to produce their first winning record since 2008. Otherwise, the organization will suffer its sixth straight losing season, which would match the Houston Astros for the longest active streak of sub-.500 seasons.

Alderson's challenges have included working with a low payroll for a New York franchise -- roughly $85 million, which is $60 million less than the highest total of predecessor Omar Minaya.

The Mets have made strides toward turning the corner. The club is particularly deep with young starting pitching, including Zack Wheeler and NL Rookie of the Year candidate Jacob deGrom. Things should further be solidified on the pitching side in 2015 with ace Matt Harvey and former closer Bobby Parnell expected to return from Tommy John procedures.

FoxSports.com earlier reported the extension progress with Alderson.
