Yanks, Chris Capuano reach deal

NEW YORK -- The Yankees have re-signed left-hander Chris Capuano to a one-year contract.

The team didn't disclose financial terms, but a source told ESPNNewYork.com that the deal is worth $5 million.

In signing Capuano, the Yankees feel they are adding depth to a rotation that will enter spring training full of questions and potential.

The signing of Capuano, along with the rhetoric coming out of the Bronx, could be further proof that the Yankees are sincere about not be giving free-agent ace Max Scherzer a mega-contract.

When asked about Scherzer on Tuesday, an official said the Yankees will "absolutely not" be in on him this winter. On Sunday night, Brian Cashman told WNBC-TV in New York: "I think that's a lot higher level than we're willing to play in right now."

The Yankees picked up Capuano off the scrap heap in 2014. He started the season with the Boston Red Sox before being released. The Colorado Rockies snagged him, where he pitched in their minor league system, before the Yankees purchased his rights. For the Yankees, Capuano was 2-3 with a 4.25 ERA.

Their rotation consists of Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia, Michael Pineda and Ivan Nova -- all of whom have injury concerns. Tanaka rehabilitated from a small tear in an elbow ligament last season, and the Yankees say he is fine now.

Sabathia had knee surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training. Pineda has had past shoulder problems and has shown an inability to stay on the mound as a Yankee. Nova had Tommy John surgery in 2014 and won't be returning until May or June.

As it stands, Capuano, David Phelps, Adam Warren, Bryan Mitchell and possibly Manny Banuelos will fight for the fourth and fifth spots in the rotation to begin the year. Top prospect Luis Severino could be called up at some point.

Capuano's salary with the Yankees is not guaranteed, meaning he can be released during spring training for 30 or 45 days of termination pay, depending on the timing.
