Stevie Brown ready to deliver in New York

NFL, New York Giants, Houston Texans

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Battered by injuries at safety, the New York Giants brought back Stevie Brown on Monday to likely compete for a starting job.

Brown asked for and was granted his release by the Houston Texans, clearing the way for a reunion with the Giants. Brown played for the Giants from 2012 to 2014 before signing with the Texans.

"Pretty exciting," Brown said after passing his physical. "To be able to come back here, seemed like a position of need, seemed like a good fit."

The Giants have lost four safeties to serious injuries this month: Mykkele Thompson (Achilles), Bennett Jackson (knee), Justin Currie (ankle) and Nat Berhe (calf). Rookie Landon Collins is just returning from injury and started Saturday night against the Jets alongside Jeromy Miles. The team also recently signed veteran Brandon Meriweather.

Brown had eight interceptions and 76 tackles in his first season with the Giants in 2012 but missed 2013 due to an ACL injury. He returned in 2014 but had only 38 tackles. He underwent Lisfranc surgery after the season and said he was cleared in July and has been a full go ever since.

"I hear nothing but good things from the guys that I was still talking to during preseason," Brown said. "[Safeties coach Dave Merritt] was just explaining to me a little of the philosophy that he runs out here on defense. Even though I have mainly been known as a post player, I can still come down into the box here and do what I need to do. Safeties are interchangeable."
