Giants TE Daniel Fells put on season-ending IR with staph infection

New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells will be placed on season-ending injured reserve due to a staph infection in his ankle, the team announced Monday.

The Giants said Fells, who missed the team's Week 2 and Week 4 games, "was being treated for a chronic ankle condition. During the evaluation process, it was discovered that he has a staph infection, which requires treatment, and he will be placed on injured reserve."

Fells is the Giants' one reliable blocking tight end, and they have missed his presence in the running game. With reserve tight end Jerome Cunningham also having missed Sunday's game due to an injury, the Giants elevated Will Tye from their practice squad. Tye and Larry Donnell were the only active tight ends the Giants had for Sunday's game in Buffalo.

Obviously, they are now precariously thin at that position and could look to add someone from the outside. Former Washington tight end Chris Cooley was among the veterans who worked out for the Giants last week, and it's likely they'll bring in other tight ends as part of their usual Tuesday workout session this week.
