Grayson: 'I'm up there' with top QBs

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- In an NFL draft with two quarterbacks at the top of the board in Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota, Colorado State's Garrett Grayson said Monday he has "no doubt" he can be No. 3 on the list.

Grayson also is confident enough in his NFL future that he isn't willing to concede either of the top two spots.

Grayson, who could not throw at the 2015 combine because of a hamstring injury, threw for representatives from about a dozen teams Monday. It was his first opportunity to throw for scouts since he suffered his injury Feb. 10.

"I proved what I can do today," Grayson said. "I think I'm up there with the best, I think obviously everyone knows Winston, Mariota are kind of the 1-2. But as quarterbacks, or any position, you should always be pushing, always fighting for the No. 1 spot at your position, no matter who's out there.

"Me, Bryce Petty and Brett Hundley were all considered to be fighting for that third spot. I can guarantee you can ask those guys too, they're not fighting for the [No. 3], they're fighting for the No. 1. It's up to us to make that happen. ... I feel very happy and I've watched all those guys throw and compete -- there's not a doubt in my mind that I can compete with them."

Grayson completed 70-of-74 throws in the workout -- with one drop from wide receiver Charles Lovett -- as scouts asked him to throw from the hashmark to the far sideline much of the time, from both the left and right side of the field.

Since his injury kept him out of the combine workouts, Grayson said he felt some nerves Sunday night and into Monday morning, leading up to the throwing session. He also said his two 40-yard dashes for scouts Monday were the first times he has sprinted since his injury.

"What you guys just saw was my first sprint in over a month," Grayson said. "That gives me confidence going forward that I can move without something happening."

Grayson passed for 4,006 yards this past season to go with 32 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
