Andre Roberts, frustrated by his role with Arizona after four seasons with the Cardinals, signed with Washington with the idea he'd be the No. 2 receiver. But then the Redskins signed DeSean Jackson and now Roberts wonders what that means for him.
The Redskins signed Roberts on the first day of free agency and added Jackson three weeks later. When Roberts signed, he acknowledged that he struggled being a No. 3 target in Arizona in 2013, telling ESPN.com, "It was definitely really frustrating for me."
Now the Redskins have Jackson and Pierre Garcon at receiver.
"I envisioned one thing and then we signed DeSean Jackson," Roberts told ESPN 980's "Inside the Locker Room" on Thursday. "So I haven't really thought too much."
Washington gave Roberts a four-year contract worth potentially $16 million, with $8 million guaranteed. He caught 64 passes in 2012. Last season, as a No. 3 target behind Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd, Roberts had 43 receptions.
Roberts wants to see how it plays out in Washington.
"That's how the league is, that's how the league works," Roberts told hosts Brian Mitchell, Doc Walker and Scott Jackson. "Going into my situation, I wanted to be the No. 2 receiver. But I still don't how it's going to work out. Obviously, when you look at how much money is being made [for] each guy, you'd think that's going to be [the] No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3."
Roberts could also serve as a returner for the Redskins. Both he and Jackson have returned punts in the past, but Roberts told 980 that he anticipated doing so in Washington.
"I think I'll be returning," Roberts said. "Anytime I feel like I can get my hands on the ball, I want to do it. If I can get back there and return some kicks and return some punts for this team, I'm going to be pretty happy."
