Deonte Thompson charges dropped

NFL, Baltimore Ravens

Drug charges against Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Deonte Thompson were dropped this week, according to Alachua County Court records in Florida.

The case was dismissed due to "insufficient evidence." Thompson, a reserve wide receiver who has 15 career receptions, was arrested on suspicion of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia on Feb. 21 in Gainesville, Fla.

According to Gainesville, Fla., police, Thompson was a passenger in a car with two other men when police found a duffle bag with several smaller bags of marijuana, weighing a total of 29 grams. The other two men, Alvon J. Summerall and Erskine J. McKinley, told police the marijuana was theirs. Thompson said the duffle bag was his, but the marijuana inside the bag was not.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh expressed his disappointment in Thompson at the NFL owners meetings last month.

"You can't be riding around in a car with marijuana in your bag," Harbaugh said. "I don't care what your reason or your excuse is for it. You can't be riding around with guys that you have no business riding around with."

There are two other Ravens dealing with legal issues. Running back Ray Rice has been indicted on third-degree aggravated assault for allegedly striking his fiancée unconscious, and backup offensive lineman Jah Reid has pleaded not guilty to two misdemeanor counts of battery stemming from an altercation at a strip club in Key West, Fla.
