Tandon Doss, Allen Robinson hurt

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars can't seem to keep their receivers healthy.

Tandon Doss suffered a badly sprained right ankle on the final play of Thursday's practice, and second-round pick Allen Robinson sat out most of practice with tightness in his right hamstring. Robinson will be out for at least two weeks, but it's unknown how much time Doss will miss.

With those two out, the Jaguars now are left with only eight healthy receivers, only three of whom have caught a pass in an NFL game.

The Jags already were without receivers Cecil Shorts and Ace Sanders. Shorts is out for at least another week because of a right hamstring strain, while Sanders is on a leave of absence for personal reasons and also is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

"It's a very physical game, a lot of contact, and the reality is that injuries do happen," said Mike Brown, who has the most experience of any of the remaining healthy receivers (32 catches in 13 games). "When those injuries happen you've got to have a next-man-up mentality. Everybody has got to be ready to step in.

"Nobody's going to feel sorry for you, so hopefully guys can capitalize on the opportunity, and hopefully he [Doss] can get back. I don't know the severity of his injury, but hopefully he can get back with us pretty quick."

In addition to Doss and Robinson, right guard Brandon Linder (right foot sprain), reserve defensive tackle Jordan Miller (knee), and reserve linebacker John Lotulelei (left MCL sprain) also went down with injuries Thursday. Robinson, Linder and Miller will be re-evaluated Friday.

Doss, a free-agent acquisition who signed a two-year, $1.5 million contract, was injured when linebacker Geno Hayes rolled onto his foot after an incomplete pass near the sideline during an 11-on-11 drill in the red zone. Doss immediately grabbed his right ankle and cried out in pain.

Trainers fitted his ankle in an air cast and he was taken off the field on a cart. X-rays showed no fracture.

Robinson left the field during individual work and never returned. He missed eight of the nine OTAs and all of minicamp with the same injury. He and receiver Marqise Lee were the team's second-round picks and had been working with the first-team offense because of the absence of Shorts and Sanders.

"We know how important it is to be out there right now but at the end of the day we need him [Robinson] for this season," Lee said. "Him and Cecil [Shorts], we need them as healthy as possible as far as just getting ready for the season. If they need that time right now, they need that time right now."

In addition to Brown, the only other healthy receivers who have caught a pass in a game are Kerry Taylor (22 catches in 10 games) and Lamaar Thomas (two in two games).

The Jaguars have been here before. Seven receivers missed a significant amount of time during OTAs and minicamp because of a variety of injuries. That forced players including Taylor, Thomas, Chad Bumphis and Allen Hurns to get double or even triple their normal reps.
