OAKLAND, Calif. -- Oakland Raiders rookie quarterback Derek Carr suffered what was called a concussion by Raiders coach Dennis Allen late in his team's 27-26 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions on Friday night.
Carr, the Raiders' QB of the future and second-round draft pick out of Fresno State, was tackled from behind and landed on violently by 262-pound Lions defensive end Larry Webster while rolling out of the pocket to his right with 5:35 remaining in the game. Carr, who threw an incompletion on the play, immediately grabbed at his ribs and headed for the locker room.
"He has sore ribs," Allen said, "but the concussion is why he came out of the game."
And it is also why, per the NFL's concussion protocol, Carr was off-limits to reporters in the postgame locker room and could not be asked about his injuries.
Carr, though, was joking with receiver Brice Butler, who caught the 19-yard touchdown pass from third-string quarterback Matt McGloin to tie the game at 26-all with nine seconds to play.
"Don't make me laugh," Carr told Butler in anguish as he grabbed at his left side.
His ribs were not taped.
Carr played in six series, including one with the first-team offense, and led the Raiders on scoring drives in three of his four full possessions. He completed nine of 16 passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Also suffering injuries for Oakland were strong safety Tyvon Branch (ankle), running back Maurice Jones-Drew (finger), tackle Matt McCants (concussion) and tight end Scott Simonson (concussion).
