Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen raised a few eyebrows Friday night when he said Derek Carr suffered a concussion when it was obvious the rookie quarterback was pointing to his ribs after taking a blow in his team's 27-26 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions.
In a conference call with Bay Area reporters Saturday, Allen said X-rays were taken of Carr's ribs and the results were negative, though the second-round pick is still concussed. As such, Carr is off-limits to reporters until he passes the NFL-mandated concussion protocol.
"I spoke to Derek this morning," Allen said. "He's feeling a lot better ... got to take that day by day."
Allen also said he hoped safety Usama Young (quad) would come off the physically unable to perform list Sunday and practice. But when asked if he thought he could see D.J. Hayden (foot) on the practice field this week, Allen said, "I don't expect that."
Strong safety Tyvon Branch, who missed 14 games last season after suffering a broken fibula, injured an ankle against the Lions.
"It's not serious and we'll see whether he's able to go out to practice tomorrow or not," Allen said. "But I don't expect that to be anything that we have to worry about."
