Jake Matthews out vs. Bengals

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Atlanta Falcons rookie left tackle Jake Matthews has been ruled out of Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals with a left ankle injury, coach Mike Smith said following Friday's practice.

Matthews suffered the injury in the first half of last week's 37-34 overtime win over the New Orleans Saints. He exited the stadium in a walking boot.

On Friday, Matthews tested the ankle for the first time while working on planting with his left foot. He did not have a helmet on during the exercise.

"Jake was able to come out here and work a little bit,'' Smith said. "We really like the progress that he has made in his work with the trainers and coming out and working with us a little bit today.''

Gabe Carimi is set to start at left tackle for Matthews, with Lamar Holmes at right tackle.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said his players simply have to prepare for the Falcons, regardless of who's playing tackle.

"Somebody said that Baltimore was down to so many DBs [Thursday] night and so, 'Oh, Pittsburgh's going to do this and do that.' It just doesn't happen that way," Lewis said. "We've got to go beat the Atlanta Falcons. Whoever they put out there is going to be a professional football player and we better outperform them. That's the way we always look at it."

Wide receiver Roddy White is listed as probable for the Falcons after banging his left knee against the Saints. White was limited during the week.
