Cardinals sign LB Victor Butler

The Arizona Cardinals made room for a pair of outside linebackers on Tuesday.

Arizona signed former New Orleans Saints linebacker Victor Butler, who missed last season while on the physically unable to perform list with a knee injury.

Butler spent the first four years of his career with the Dallas Cowboys, where he played in 63 games while starting two of them. He had 65 tackles and 11 sacks with Dallas, where he only missed one game in four seasons.

The Cardinals released linebacker Marcus Benard, who was inactive Sunday against the New York Giants, and punter Drew Butler. Benard was re-signed Wednesday with a roster exemption stemming from Abraham's leave of absence. Butler was signed because punter Dave Zastudil was suffering from a left groin injury.

By releasing two players and signing one, Arizona leaves a roster spot open for Abraham who was expected to return from his leave on Tuesday, according to coach Bruce Arians.
