Jags tab 2 new starters on O-line

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jaguars will have two new starters on the offensive line for Sunday's home opener against the Indianapolis Colts, but there won't be a change at quarterback.

Rookie sixth-round pick Luke Bowanko is replacing Jacques McClendon at center and fifth-year veteran Sam Young is replacing Cameron Bradfield, whom the Jaguars cut on Tuesday, at right tackle. Young's tenure will be short, though, because regular starter Austin Pasztor is expected to return from a broken bone in his right hand within the next two weeks.

At quarterback, Chad Henne remains the starter, meaning the long-awaited debut of No. 3 overall pick Blake Bortles won't happen for at least another week.

Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said that Henne hasn't played poorly in the first two games and that the decision to keep Bortles on the bench wasn't affected by the fact that the Jaguars could have as many as six rookies on the field on offense: Bowanko, right guard Brandon Linder, receiver Marqise Lee, receiver Allen Robinson, receiver Allen Hurns and tight end Marcel Jensen.

"I don't think we're worried about setting him [Bortles] up for failure," Fisch said. "I think we're just worried about making sure that we don't blame Chad for something that maybe Chad wasn't responsible for."

The changes on the offensive line were prompted by the Jaguars' allowing a team-record 10 sacks in a 41-10 loss to Washington on Sunday. Fisch said the offensive line was responsible for six sacks, with the rest being spread among the receivers (two), backs (one) and Henne (one).

"We just need to continue to improve, fight, compete and battle, and I never expect a game like that again," Fisch said.

Bradfield was responsible for three sacks and was benched late in the Redskins game for Young, who has made just four starts in his previous four seasons with Dallas, Buffalo and Jacksonville. McClendon also got benched against the Redskins for Bowanko, who played the final 12 snaps. He played center for only eight games as a senior at Virginia.

The Jaguars, meanwhile, will get a boost on defense, as safety Jonathan Cyprien has been cleared to return from the concussion he suffered in Week 1. Cyprien practiced Wednesday.
