Shorts: Jags accept Gratz's apology

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars cornerback Dwayne Gratz on Wednesday apologized to his coaches and teammates for his Sunday morning arrest for disorderly intoxication and trespassing.

"Out of respect, I don't think I could walk around here if I didn't let them know what was up and what happened. They're all behind me. They know that's not me."

He also extended that apology to include the organization and his family when he met with the media shortly before practice.

"First off I want to apologize to my family, my friends, this organization, especially my teammates for my actions," Gratz said. "I know it is wrong but we are human, we make mistakes. So I've just got to become a better man from this and move on."

Gratz said he believed he owed it to his teammates to explain what happened, especially because a police report noted that he tried to pay for several items at a grocery store with bubble gum because he didn't have any money.

"Out of respect, I don't think I could walk around here if I didn't let them know what was up and what happened," he said. "They're all behind me. They know that's not me. That's not who I am and not who I'm trying to be, so they're behind me and they're there for me."

Receiver Cecil Shorts said the team accepted Gratz's apology.

"We have nothing but love for him," he said. "We all make mistakes. We have all have issues and stuff like that so we're not going to dog him or not show love for him. He apologized and we forgave him and now it's back to football."

Gratz said he also had a discussion with coach Gus Bradley and reiterated Bradley's comments on Monday that any discipline will be handled internally. Gratz said he expects to play Sunday when the Jaguars play at Indianapolis.

Gratz was arrested shortly before 6 a.m. ET Sunday at an on-site grocery store at the Ocean Reef Suites in Miami Beach, Florida, and was charged with misdemeanor disorderly intoxication and trespassing.

According to a Miami Beach Police Department report, Gratz argued with an employee at the store after he tried to pay for several items with bubble gum because he didn't have any money. After Gratz refused to leave the store and started a disturbance that caused other customers to leave the store, the report said the employee called police.

The two MBPD officers who arrived noticed that Gratz had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol, the report said. They told Gratz to leave the store several times but he told police: "No. I'm not leaving."

After being given one more chance to leave, Gratz was arrested. According to Miami-Dade County court records, Gratz spent the night in jail and was released on $1,000 bond Monday morning.
