Steve Christie battling cancer

Former Buffalo Bills kicker Steve Christie is in remission from rectal cancer after a July diagnosis, he told The Buffalo News in a story published Monday.

The Bills' all-time leading scorer had surgery last month and was found free of the cancer earlier this month.

"I guess it's fairly large," Christie told the newspaper of the tumor, "but the good news is it had not spread to any other areas. It was very close to the prostate and the bladder. So I did chemo and radiation together. They find the treatment extremely effective."

Christie, 47, played for the Bills from 1992 to 2000. He was a five-year teammate of quarterback Jim Kelly, who has been in remission from sinus cancer since August.
