Ex-Giants DC jumps to Redskins

NFL, Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins added another piece to their defensive staff, hiring former New York Giants defensive coordinator Perry Fewell as their secondary coach, the team announced Tuesday.

Fewell replaces Raheem Morris, who left to become an assistant head coach/secondary coach with the Atlanta Falcons on Monday.

Fewell spent the past five seasons as New York's defensive coordinator but was fired after this past season. The Giants had two top-10 defenses in terms of yards allowed during his tenure. They were 22nd in points allowed and 29th in yards allowed in 2014.

Fewell was the secondary coach for three different teams -- theĀ Jacksonville Jaguars, St. Louis Rams and Chicago Bears -- before becoming the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator from 2006 to '09.

Fewell also had an offer from the San Francisco 49ers to become their defensive backs coach, according to a source.

In Washington, Fewell will work with a secondary in need of repair. The Redskins could be searching for two starting safeties as well as a handful of backups at both safety and corner.

The Redskins hired Joe Barry last week to be their defensive coordinator. They will retain inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti but still need an outside linebackers coach, as well as a defensive line coach.
