Report: Geep Chryst to be 49ers' OC

NFL, San Francisco 49ers

Geep Chryst was one of the few holdovers from former coach Jim Harbaugh's staff after serving as the San Francisco 49ers' quarterbacks coach from 2011 through 2014.

Chryst was not, however, assigned a title. In fact, the 49ers have yet to officially announce any assistant hires for new coach Jim Tomsula since he was announced on Jan. 14, two weeks ago.

A promotion, though, is coming for Chryst as he is expected to be named the Niners' offensive coordinator, according to the NFL Network.

This after the Niners missed on at least three purported candidates -- Lane Kiffin, who chose to stay at Alabama, Rob Chudzinski, who got a promotion to stay with the Indianapolis Colts, and Philadelphia receivers coach Bob Bicknell, who will stay with the Eagles in that position.

The Niners were also linked to Marc Trestman, who was hired as the Baltimore Ravens' O.C., and former Denver Broncos O.C. Adam Gase, who interviewed twice for the 49ers' head coaching job.

Chryst, meanwhile, has experience as an O.C., albeit during the Clinton administration.

It was in 1999 and 2000 when Chryst was the offensive playcaller for the San Diego Chargers. His units were ranked 26th and 28th in total offense those seasons for teams that went 8-8 and 1-15.

A Chargers quarterback then? Harbaugh.

Chryst has had a shining moment with the 49ers, though, as it was his play call -- the "Vernon Post" -- that resulted in tight end Vernon Davis' last-minute game-winning catch from Alex Smith against the New Orleans Saints in the 2011 playoffs at Candlestick Park.

A promotion from QB coach to O.C. should keep some continuity and familiarity in line for Niners QB Colin Kaepernick.
