Free-agent quarterback Josh McCown, recently released by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is visiting the Cleveland Browns on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to an NFL source.
McCown started 11 games for the Bucs last year, completing 184 of 327 passes for 2,206 yards, 11 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
Tampa Bay didn't work out for McCown, but the 12-year NFL veteran has shown success as a starter, throwing for 13 touchdowns to one interception for the Bears in 2013. McCown started nine games for the Raiders in 2007, when new Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo coached quarterbacks. The two still have a good relationship.
The Browns are casting a wide search for a quarterback as Johnny Manziel has entered treatment and the team could move on from last year's starter, Brian Hoyer.
McCown wants to compete for a starting job but would be willing to accept a backup job if he doesn't become the starter. He visited with the Buffalo Bills last week and also met with officials from the Chicago Bears and New York Jets at the scouting combine in Indianapolis.
Hoyer, who won seven games for Cleveland but faltered late in the year, is waiting to meet with general manager Ray Farmer before talks with the team and his representative begin.
People in NFL circles believe the Browns are also intrigued by trade options such as Rams starter Sam Bradford or another Bucs quarterback, Mike Glennon. But it's uncertain whether they could pull off trades for those players.
