Michael Sam set for veteran combine

NFL, Missouri Tigers

In addition to dancing with the stars, free agent defensive end Michael Sam will train for the pros.

Sam has been accepted into the NFL veteran combine, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL team, Sam was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of last year's draft but was released before the start of the season.

The SEC co-defensive player of the year in 2013, Sam was signed to the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad in September but was waived less than two months later.

The veteran combine will be held March 22 in Tempe, Arizona, less than a week after Sam is set to start competing on the latest season of ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," which starts March 16.

Former NFL starter Vince Young also has signed up to be at the veteran combine, NFL Network reported Friday.

Young, a first-round pick of the Titans in 2006, last played in the league in 2011, for the Eagles.
