PHOENIX -- The first signing from the NFL veterans combine goes to the Arizona Cardinals, as the team announced the signing of wide receiver Nathan Slaughter on Monday afternoon. Slaughter's agent, Chris Gittings of OneWest Sports, said his client signed a two-year deal with the Cardinals. Slaughter tweeted his gratitude for another opportunity to prove he could make an NFL roster. Cornerback Deveron Carr became the second signing when he inked a deal later Monday with the Indianapolis Colts. After going undrafted out of West Texas A&M in 2014, Slaughter entered the NFL with the Texans as a rookie free agent and was released by Houston on May 19. The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Slaughter in June, and he was waived in August before being placed on injured reserve. The Jaguars cut ties with him Nov. 13. Slaughter, who is 5-foot-9, 184 pounds, can be a receiver and returner. He started 43 of 47 games in college, and caught 174 passes for 1,978 yards and 14 touchdowns. As a senior, he returned three touchdowns. He played two years at West Texas A&M with Cardinals receiver Brittan Golden, and his size and speed are similar to Cardinals receiver John Brown's. Slaughter ran an unofficial 4.55 in the 40-yard dash -- the fastest time at the veterans combine. The 5-foot-11, 190-pound Carr followed a similar path to the veterans combine. An undrafted free agent out of Arizona State, he played in nine games with Tampa Bay in 2013, all on special teams, before he was cut in August. The Colts, who have found hidden gems in some unusual places, now are giving Carr a chance to jump-start his career in a secondary looking for depth. Slaughter and Carr were among 105 free agents to go through position-specific drills in front of scouts from all 32 teams Sunday at the NFL's first veterans combine hosted at the Cardinals' practice facility.
