Colts to wait on Andrew Luck's deal

NFL, Indianapolis Colts

PHOENIX -- The Indianapolis Colts likely won't address franchise quarterback Andrew Luck's next contract until after the 2015 season, owner Jim Irsay said Monday.

Irsay, speaking the NFL's annual owners meetings, said the team has had conversations with Luck's representatives, but there's no sense of urgency to get a deal done as Luck heads into his fourth year in the league. The Colts are expected to pick up the fifth-year option on Luck's rookie contract.

"Andrew still has two years left, and whatever our talks are between Andrew and his people will remain confidential," Irsay said. "... I really think most likely the scenario is going into the offseason next year is when that second contract will come up. That's the vision I have right now."

There's little doubt that Luck will become one of the highest-paid -- if not the highest-paid -- players once he gets his new contract. Luck will have the opportunity to sit back and see what type of contract the Seattle Seahawks give quarterback Russell Wilson. The Seahawks hope to sign Wilson, who is also part of the 2012 quarterback draft class, to an extension before the start of the 2015 season.

Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, has helped the franchise make a smooth transition from the Peyton Manning era by leading the Colts to the playoffs in each of his three seasons and back-to-back AFC South titles while going 12-0 in the division since 2013. The Colts lost to the New England Patriots in AFC Championship Game last season.

Luck led the league in touchdown passes (40) and was third in passing yards (4,761) in 2014.
