Andrew Luck has 5th-year option exercised, will make $16.15M in 2016

INDIANAPOLIS -- To no one's surprise, the Indianapolis Colts announced Thursday that they have picked up the fifth-year option of franchise quarterback Andrew Luck.

Luck, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 draft, will make $16.15 million in 2016. The $16 million seems like a bargain for the Colts when you consider that Luck will likely become the NFL's highest-paid player when he signs his new deal.

Colts owner Jim Irsay said during the NFL owners in Phoenix last month that the franchise will wait until after the 2015 season before addressing Luck's contract situation.

"Andrew still has two years left, and whatever our talks are between Andrew and his people will remain confidential," Irsay said at the time. " ... I really think most likely the scenario is going into the offseason next year is when that second contract will come up. That's the vision I have right now."

Luck, 25, led the league in touchdown passes (40) and was third in passing yards (4,761) in 2014. He has led the Colts to the playoffs in each of his three seasons and back-to-back AFC South titles. Indianapolis lost to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game last season.
