Bills fans miss out on $100K prize in contest for third straight year

For the third straight year, Buffalo Bills fans couldn't defy the odds and predict the team's schedule from scratch including the bye week.

The team said Wednesday that one fan predicted 10 of 17 weeks correctly, including whether each game would be at home or on the road. That's better than last year, when 19 fans picked a high of seven games accurately.

Getting the schedule exactly right would have resulted in a fan winning $100,000 cash. Instead, this year's winner, who has not yet been announced, will get a pair of season tickets to games at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The odds of getting all 17 weeks right, including the bye week, is 1 in 477,049,570,000,000,000,000, said Louis Mittel, a Ph.D. student in statistics at Columbia University. Mittel took into account that the Bills would be guaranteed to play each of the teams in their division twice, each of the teams in the NFC East once and six of 12 teams in the rest of the AFC.

Bills spokesman Scott Berchtold said there were more than 15,000 entries in the contest this year.

Only 1.8 percent of those entries got the first week right -- a matchup on Sunday, Sept. 13, at home against the Indianapolis Colts. Only 12 of those fans also got the second week right -- a Sunday home game against the New England Patriots on Sept. 20. And only one fan had all of the first three games right, correctly calling that the team would play the Miami Dolphins on the road the following Sunday.

This year's winner guessed five out of the first seven weeks as well as the bye week in Week 8.
