Redskins release veteran cornerback Tracy Porter

The Washington Redskins released veteran cornerback Tracy Porter on Wednesday, ending the veteran corner's one-year stay in Washington.

The move saves Washington $2.33 million in salary-cap space, though Porter will count as $1 million in dead money.

The Redskins signed Porter to be their nickel cornerback last season, but he played in only three games because of various injuries. The knock on Porter, 28, throughout his career has been durability. He has played in all 16 games only once in his seven-year career -- in 2013 with Oakland.

He became replaceable in Washington because of newfound depth at the position. The Redskins signed Chris Culliver in the offseason to start and have DeAngelo Hall returning from an Achilles injury. They also have second-year corner Bashaud Breeland, who started 15 games in place of Hall last season, and third-year David Amerson, who started every game in 2014.

Breeland worked in the slot in some games, notably vs. Indianapolis. The Redskins also drafted a slot corner, Tevin Mitchel from Arkansas, in the sixth round.
