Free agent C.J. Spillman arrested on sexual assault charge

NFL, Dallas Cowboys

GRAPEVINE, Texas -- Former Dallas Cowboys special-teams player C.J. Spillman has been arrested on a sexual assault charge in an alleged 2014 incident at a Dallas-area hotel.

Tarrant County jail records show Spillman surrendered early Wednesday and was freed on $15,000 bond after a grand jury indicted him Monday. The alleged assault of a woman happened last Sept. 20 at the Gaylord Texan Resort, where he was staying.

Spillman, who played in all 16 games for the Cowboys last season and recorded 16 tackles, became a free agent in March.

Sgt. Robert Eberling says the woman filed a complaint within days of the incident. Eberling declined to provide further details on the investigation.

His agent, Ron Slavin, declined comment Wednesday about the criminal case and says Spillman no longer lives in the Dallas area. The Cowboys also declined comment.

Police wrapped up their investigation in February, and the Cowboys and NFL said at the time of the incident that it would look into the matter. Coach Jason Garrett continued to let Spillman play during the investigation, saying his roster spot wouldn't be affected unless he was arrested or charged with a crime.

Spillman, who was never arrested after he was accused of attempted rape in 2013, has also played with the San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers during his seven-year career.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
