Lions RB Joique Bell to start camp on PUP list

NFL, Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions will be without their starting running back for at least the beginning of training camp.

Joique Bell, who sat out all of Detroit's spring workouts, will start August's training camp on the physically unable to perform list as he recovers from injuries that required surgery this offseason. Bell, who wouldn't divulge what those injuries were earlier this spring, had issues with his knee and Achilles last season.

Bell had a career-high 860 rushing yards last season with seven touchdowns. The team released Reggie Bush in the offseason, and Bell and second-round draft pick Ameer Abdullah are expected to be the Lions' top two running backs in 2015.

A native of Benton Harbor, Michigan, Bell often declined to discuss his health status during spring workouts and deflected questions in June about whether he would be ready for the start of training camp.

Bell is one of three starters for the Lions who will begin camp on the PUP list, joining defensive end Jason Jones and right tackle LaAdrian Waddle. Jones missed minicamp with an undisclosed injury, and Waddle is still recovering from knee injuries suffered during the 2014 season. All three are eligible to come off the PUP list at any time during training camp.
