Monday NFL preview: Patriots giving Reggie Wayne a look

NFL Nation reporters look ahead to Monday.

AFC EAST

Buffalo Bills: The Bills will have Monday off before returning Tuesday for their final training camp practice at St. John Fisher College. The Bills have transitioned to running their first-team offense almost exclusively against scout-team defense looks in practice, so evaluation of the quarterbacks won't ramp up again until Saturday's preseason game. The Bills gave Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel first-team reps in Sunday's practice. -- Mike Rodak

Miami Dolphins: The Dolphins get their second consecutive day off following their preseason loss to the Panthers. Injured players such as cornerback Jamar Taylor (quad) get another day to rest. -- James Walker

New England Patriots: Will the Patriots make a move for veteran receiver Reggie Wayne? Bringing him to town Sunday for a physical, the team is doing its due diligence as it also manages a receiving corps that is filled with players recovering from injuries. Could Wayne really make the move from Indianapolis to New England? It's a compelling storyline, no doubt. -- Mike Reiss

New York Jets: On Monday, the focus will be on the trainer's room. So what else is new? The Jets will be awaiting test results on rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, who suffered a knee injury during a Sunday night practice at Long Island's Hofstra University. They also will be eager to see how defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (hamstring) responded to his first practice in three weeks. The hope is that Wilkerson, one of the keys to the Jets' defense, can make his preseason debut Saturday night against the Giants. -- Rich Cimini

AFC NORTH

Baltimore Ravens: After a day off Sunday, the Ravens will begin preparations for their third preseason game against the Washington Redskins. This is when the starters receive their most extended action of the preseason, and it's the first time of the preseason that the Ravens will devise a game plan for an opponent. Ravens coach John Harbaugh believes the 40-17 loss in Philadelphia on Saturday was the result of not specifically scheming for the Eagles. -- Jamison Hensley

Cincinnati Bengals: After going 10 days between their first two preseason games, the Bengals are about to endure a jam-packed 10-day stretch. Monday night's game at Tampa Bay is the first of three preseason contests the Bengals will have in the next week and a half. Because of the pace of this upcoming stretch, it will be interesting see how much starters, like those on Andy Dalton's offensive units, will play in those games. -- Coley Harvey

Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel probably will sit out Monday's practice after he left Sunday's practice early with a sore right elbow. Coach Mike Pettine said the team would likely let Manziel rest, which combined with a Tuesday off day would give Manziel two days off in a row. With Manziel not throwing, quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell may have to take part in some drills. Monday's practice marks the official end of training camp. -- Pat McManamon

Pittsburgh Steelers: An offensive line with so much promise can't seem to stay healthy. That's been the case for the past few years, and 2015 is no exception with Maurkice Pouncey likely needing left ankle surgery. The spotlight will find backup Cody Wallace, a seventh-year NFL lineman who will probably replace Pouncey. He'll need to find a rhythm with Ben Roethlisberger and keep continuity on the line starting Tuesday, when the Steelers reconvene for practice. -- Jeremy Fowler

AFC SOUTH

Houston Texans: Texans coach Bill O'Brien celebrated a family milestone on Saturday. His son Jack celebrated his 13th birthday. "Every birthday for Jack is a good day," O'Brien said. "That puts a lot of things in perspective for me and our family and it was a good day." Jack O'Brien has a brain condition called lissencephaly, which requires near around-the-clock care. He has already beat the life expectancy typically associated with lissencephaly. -- Tania Ganguli

Indianapolis Colts: The Colts return to practice Monday after having Sunday off. Right tackle Jack Mewhort is anxious to get back on the practice field after struggling in Saturday's game against Chicago. He was badly beaten on two straight plays, including giving up a sack on a play. Coach Chuck Pagano acknowledged that there will be growing pains for Mewhort as he continues to get used to playing tackle after starting at left guard last season. -- Mike Wells

Jacksonville Jaguars: RB T.J. Yeldon and DE Chris Clemons are scheduled to begin practicing without limitations Monday. Yeldon has been wearing a noncontact red vest for the past two weeks since suffering a sprained finger on his left hand. Clemons was removed from the active/non-football injury list only last Monday and he practiced on a limited basis last week. Both players are expected to make their preseason debut on Friday against Detroit. -- Mike DiRocco

Tennessee Titans: The Titans will recover from a solid effort in the second preseason game on Monday, as they start a short week to get ready for their Friday night game in Kansas City. It seems like it would be difficult for corners Jason McCourty or Blidi Wreh-Wilson to be ready to play, so the Titans could have to wait until the preseason finale or even the regular-season opener to have all their defensive backs. -- Paul Kuharsky

AFC WEST

Denver Broncos: Early in the Broncos' offseason program running back Ronnie Hillman didn't have much of a role on special teams and looked pinned as the No. 3 back on the depth chart, which put his roster spot on shaky ground -- coach Gary Kubiak has said the No. 2 and No. 3 running backs also have to be "core'' special-teams players. But now Hillman has started to work on those units and he's also shown himself to be the most explosive option at the position with 120 yards rushing on his 16 carries in two preseason games -- a 7.5 yards-per-carry average. And this week, during joint practices with the 49ers, it will be intriguing to see if the Broncos move him up the depth chart into the No. 2 spot behind C.J. Anderson. -- Jeff Legwold

Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs are still trying to crank up their long passing game. The Chiefs have just two pass plays in their two preseason games of more than 25 yards and both were delivered by players (wide receiver Fred Williams and running back Spencer Ware) who might not make the regular-season roster. The Chiefs are averaging just 9.4 yards per completion, or more than 2 yards less than their opponents. -- Adam Teicher

Oakland Raiders: The Raiders don't practice until Wednesday. It will be their first full work since a sloppy 20-12 loss at Minnesota. Oakland had 13 penalties for 106 yards in the loss. It had just two penalties in the first preseason game against the Rams. Expect penalties to be a major focus of practice this week. -- Bill Williamson

San Diego Chargers: After taking a day off, frontline players like Philip Rivers and Melvin Gordon will begin preparation for San Diego's test run for the regular season when the Chargers host the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday. Traditionally, starters get the most work in the third preseason game. San Diego in general, and Gordon in particular, has not run the ball well. And the Chargers will have to get it going against a good Seattle run defense. -- Eric D. Williams

NFC EAST

Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys are off on Monday and will get back to work for their final week in Oxnard, California, on Tuesday. The Cowboys could see the return of starters Dez Bryant, Tyron Smith, Tyrone Crawford and Ronald Leary to full-time action once they do get to the practice field. After Sunday's performance against the Niners, the Cowboys need to get their regulars all the work they can. -- Todd Archer

New York Giants: The Giants will treat this as a regular-season game week, which means Monday is their "off" day from practice. (Since the game this week is on Saturday, Monday is their regular-season Tuesday.) The front office won't be off, though. As was the case last week, expect the Giants to bring in veterans to try out for suddenly vacant spots at safety and possibly linebacker, and expect them to sign a player or two to fill those holes. The Giants return to training camp practice Tuesday, when they will work on planning for this week's opponent, the Jets, as they would on a regular Wednesday during the regular season. -- Dan Graziano

Philadelphia Eagles: Training camp is basically over. After having Sunday off to recover from Saturday's 40-17 preseason win over the Ravens, the Eagles reconvene for practice Monday with no fans or media watching. Sam Bradford will look to see how his knee responds after taking his first live hits in a year. -- Phil Sheridan

Washington Redskins: With no game until Saturday, the Redskins have no practice Monday. Their focus will be on trying to ignite the first-team offense, which has not produced a touchdown this preseason. Part of the problem last week, in addition to poor protection and quarterback play, was a lack of success on first downs -- the Redskins gained a combined 4 yards on four first-down carries. -- John Keim

NFC NORTH

Chicago Bears: The key player to watch is wide receiver Marquess Wilson, who suffered a hamstring injury in Chicago's 23-11 victory over the Indianapolis Colts. The Bears simply cannot afford another injury at receiver, not with first-round pick Kevin White beginning the season on PUP. Wilson has a history of health issues. The former seventh-round pick played in just seven games last year after he broke his collarbone in training camp. But Wilson rebounded this offseason and was enjoying another productive preseason. The Bears and Wilson claim the injury isn't serious. Only time will tell if that prognosis turns out to be accurate. -- Jeff Dickerson

Detroit Lions: The Lions have their first regular-season type of practice Monday for the media. The thing to pay attention to is if Jason Jones or LaAdrian Waddle ends up doing any team drills after coming back from the PUP list. -- Michael Rothstein

Green Bay Packers: The Packers should know for sure whether receiver Jordy Nelson's knee injury is season-ending. The Pro Bowler was expected to undergo an MRI on Monday after the team returned from Sunday's preseason game at Pittsburgh, where Nelson landed awkwardly and left the game. If tests show Nelson tore his ACL, then the Packers will be without their leading receiver from last season. -- Rob Demovsky

Minnesota Vikings: When the Vikings get back to work on Monday after a day off Sunday, they'll continue trying to figure out how to construct their secondary. Trae Waynes solely played outside on Saturday night, as the Vikings tried to simplify his workload, but coach Mike Zimmer said the Vikings could put Waynes back in the slot eventually. With Captain Munnerlyn's role in question, Waynes could wind up in the Vikings' top nickel package. -- Ben Goessling

NFC SOUTH

Atlanta Falcons: With Roddy White set to have minor arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow Monday, some of the other Falcons receivers will get a chance to get more reps both in practice and in the third and most important preseason game this Saturday at Miami. Falcons coach Dan Quinn named Nick Williams and rookie Justin Hardy as a couple of guys who might be able to take advantage of the moment, although White is expected to be ready for the Week 1 opener against the Eagles. -- Vaughn McClure

Carolina Panthers: The Panthers should get a better feel for what they can do defensively with end Charles Johnson (calf) and defensive tackle Kawann Short (back) expected to be a part of the game preparation for New England. They have played their first two preseason games with three-fourths of their defensive front out. They also will step up the learning curve for rookie wide receiver Devin Funchess, who is expected back from a tight hamstring. -- David Newton

New Orleans Saints: The Saints should be able to decide by week's end if they're ready to insert two rookie linebackers into the starting lineup. Stephone Anthony has played well while holding down the starting middle linebacker job throughout camp, and Hau'oli Kikaha had a terrific game while starting Saturday at strongside linebacker against the Patriots. But their positions will get more crowded whenever veterans Dannell Ellerbe and Anthony Spencer return from injuries. So both rookies need to lock down their jobs this week, which is the most like a "real" game week as the Saints approach the third preseason game against the Houston Texans. -- Mike Triplett

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: After a strong week of practice, rookie quarterback Jameis Winston will make his second preseason start Monday night against the Bengals. He needs to carry that practice success to the game. Winston needs to be much more consistent than he was in the preseason opener against Minnesota. -- Pat Yasinskas

NFC WEST

Arizona Cardinals: Six sacks in the first half are nothing to write home about, but the Cardinals don't have much time left before the regular season to correct it. Coming off a disappointing showing by their pass protection, the Cardinals return to practice Monday and will set out to fix the major issues from Saturday night's game, namely protecting the quarterback. -- Josh Weinfuss

St. Louis Rams: The Rams' offense struggled against the Titans as the young offensive line continued to spring leaks. With the starters in the game, the Rams picked up just two first downs and averaged 2.4 yards per carry. Those numbers have to improve for an offense that figures to be run-first and is leaning on a line with three new starters. -- Nick Wagoner

San Francisco 49ers: The 49ers are off Monday, after a 23-6 defeat of the Dallas Cowboys with NaVorro Bowman (three tackles in three snaps) and Mike Purcell (a 37-yard pick-six for the 303-pounder) making key plays. But Jarryd Hayne (three punt returns for 84 yards and eight carries for 54 yards) has become a good problem for the Niners to have as he seemingly has solidified a spot in the Niners' initial 53-man roster. Food for thought on the off day. -- Paul Gutierrez

Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks will return to practice after getting the weekend off. Reinforcements are on the way at cornerback as Richard Sherman, Will Blackmon, Tharold Simon and Marcus Burley are expected to practice. They were among the seven Seahawks cornerbacks who didn't play Friday night against Kansas City. -- Brady Henderson
