Jason McCourty has groin surgery

NFL, Tennessee Titans

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Titans No. 1 cornerback Jason McCourty, who hasn't practiced since Aug. 6, had groin surgery Monday, coach Ken Whisenhunt announced.

"It was something we thought was going to be able to be fixed through the rehab process, and it just wasn't responding as quickly as we would have liked," Whisenhunt said. "[The surgery] went very well, and now it's just the process of rehab. I don't know the exact time of the rehab, but I'm not ruling him out for the first game.

"He's been rehabbing and working so he's in pretty good shape. So I think that will aid in his rehab, and we'll just see how it progresses."

McCourty told ESPN in a text message: "Feeling pretty good. Everything went well."

Tennessee opens the regular season Sept. 13 at Tampa Bay followed by a trip to Cleveland. A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday that McCourty could miss the first three weeks of the regular season and return after the bye.

The Titans have been without McCourty and another of their top cornerbacks, Blidi Wreh-Wilson, for some time. Wreh-Wilson suffered a high ankle sprain on Aug. 8.

Free-agent signee Perrish Cox has been the top player at the position during the absence of McCourty and Wreh-Wilson, with Coty Sensabaugh as the second starter. Undrafted rookie Cody Riggs has worked as the team's third cornerback as part of the nickel package.

McCourty was a sixth-round pick out of Rutgers in 2009 and has played in all but six games in his career, including 72 starts. He started every game but one over the last four seasons.
