Rich McKay back on competition committee after suspension

Atlanta Falcons president and CEO Rich McKay has been reinstated as chairman of the NFL's competition committee, effective immediately.

McKay had been suspended from the committee after the Falcons were found guilty of piping crowd noise into the Georgia Dome.

The league confirmed that McKay met with commissioner Roger Goodell in New York on Wednesday, where Goodell advised McKay of the decision to reinstate him. McKay also released a statement Thursday afternoon.

"I have always enjoyed my service on the Competition Committee and appreciate Commissioner Goodell's confidence," McKay said. "I look forward to continuing to work with the committee and all of our teams to further improve our great game."

McKay had been suspended since April 1 as part of punishment handed down by the league for the rules violation. The league determined McKay was unaware of the violation, which was solely committed by former director of marketing Roddy White.

"Rich has been a valued member of the NFL's competition committee for 22 years, and he is recognized as a key contributor throughout the league," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said. "I fully support his reinstatement to the committee."

The Falcons were fined $350,000 and forced to forfeit a 2016 fifth-round draft pick after illegally piping crowd noise into the Georgia Dome over the past two seasons.

"What took place was wrong and nowhere near the standards by which we run our business," Blank said at the time the penalties were announced. "Anytime there are actions that compromise the integrity of the NFL or threaten the culture of our franchise, as this issue did, they will be dealt with swiftly and strongly."

McKay became the chairman of the competition committee on March 1, 2011. The committee is composed of head coaches and executives who examine the game and recommend rules changes and modifications to ensure player safety while promoting competitiveness.
