Larry Foote retires from playing, will continue as Cardinals inside LBs coach

NFL, Arizona Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Larry Foote has officially decided to trade in his cleats for a headset. He told ESPN he's decided to coach the Arizona Cardinals' inside linebackers this season instead of playing for a 14th season.

Foote began coaching the linebackers in the spring but left the door open for a return to the field. He had until the Cardinals made their first cuts on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET to make his decision. Both coach Bruce Arians and Foote himself expected the 35-year-old to stick with coaching.

In June, Foote told ESPN, "If I had to bet on it, I'm just coaching."

In late August, Arians said he'd imagine Foote would be in the press box this season instead of on the field.

Foote played in 187 games in 13 seasons for three teams -- 11 with Pittsburgh and one each with Detroit and Arizona. He also played in 17 playoff games. He finished his career with 788 tackles, 25 sacks, four interceptions, 10 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries.

Foote was a member of winning Steelers teams in both Super Bowl XL and later Super Bowl XLIII, in which Pittsburgh defeated Arizona.
