San Francisco 49ers linebacker Ahmad Brooks will not play Sunday against the New York Giants after his 40-year-old sister, Krsunthia, died from lupus, his agent, Greg Williams, said.

Krsunthia Brooks died on Wednesday. Brooks left the 49ers to be with his sister, but didn't make it to her home outside of New Orleans before she passed away.

Williams said Brooks is now in New Orleans, grieving with his family.

The funeral will be early next week. Brooks is expected to return to San Francisco and be ready to play Oct. 18 against the Ravens.

49ers coach Jim Tomsula announced Wednesday that Brooks had left the team for "family reasons." Tomsula would not say when Brooks would return, adding that the team was keeping him "in our prayers."
