Vernon Davis to miss second straight game; Joe Staley questionable

NFL, San Francisco 49ers

San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis, despite practicing in a limited fashion all week with a knee injury, has been ruled out for Sunday night's game at the New York Giants.

Davis, in his 10th NFL season, sat out last week's game against the Green Bay Packers after suffering the injury the previous week at the Arizona Cardinals. He missed two games last season and one in 2013, but before then, he had not missed a game since 2007.

The Niners also left open the possibility of outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks suiting up despite his having been away from the team all week following the death of his sister. Defensive coordinator Eric Mangini said Thursday he would not rule Brooks out completely. He is listed as doubtful.

"That's what I would say with that," Niners coach Jim Tomsula said. "I mean, we're talking about a family tragedy. That family is going through an awful time right now."

Left tackle Joe Staley, meanwhile, was limited in Friday's practice for the first time this week after Tomsula said Wednesday that Staley, who suffered a knee injury last weekend, would be back on Thursday.

"Again, we're going to get him moving around," Tomsula said of Staley, who is listed as questionable. "I'm not going to put anybody in danger."

Receiver Quinton Patton, who suffered a concussion last week, is also listed as questionable.

The 49ers list Alex Boone (shoulder), LB NaVorro Bowman (not injury-related/veteran day off), safety S L.J. McCray (knee) and tight end Vance McDonald (chest) as probable.
