Blake Bortles sprained throwing shoulder vs. Bucs

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles suffered a sprained throwing shoulder early in Sunday's loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but the team says the injury doesn't appear to be serious enough to keep Bortles from playing against the Houston Texans on Sunday.

The Jaguars said Bortles has a Grade 1 sprain of his AC joint and will likely not practice Wednesday. The Jaguars (1-4) will not practice Monday or Tuesday this week.

"Don't be surprised if you don't see him out there Wednesday, but don't be alarmed by that," coach Gus Bradley said. "It'd be a situation where we don't want him to be sore and affect his throwing mechanics.

"... Right now, we think he should be in good shape [against the Texans]."

The Jaguars aren't sure on which play Bortles was injured, but it didn't hurt his performance against the Bucs. Bortles threw for 303 yards -- the second time he has surpassed 300 yards in 19 career games -- and a career-high four touchdowns in the 38-31 loss at Raymond James Stadium.

Bortles has had a strong start to his second season, completing 57.1 percent of his passes for 1,299 yards and 10 touchdowns with four interceptions. He ranks 12th in the NFL in Total QBR (63.7), and his 10 TD passes are tied with Eli Manning for fifth in the league.

Chad Henne, who is in his eighth season, will start against Houston if Bortles is unable to play.
