SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Carolina Panthers team owner Jerry Richardson attended Thursday's practice, his first of Super Bowl week.
Richardson watched from a golf cart in the far corner of the field, as he occasionally does at the practice facility in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Coach Ron Rivera said he was pleased with the tempo of the practice in which backup quarterback Derek Anderson played the role of Denver quarterback Peyton Manning.
Anderson did his best imitation of Manning's pre-snap cadence, drawing the defense offside at one point during the 1-hour and 15-minute session with the familiar shout of "Omaha.''
"We're trying," Rivera said. "We know that certain things [with calls at the line of scrimmage] mean something else. But it's just so our players hear it.
"We got one today. That was one of the things that got me today."
Rivera said that was a good teaching tool.
"But we're shooting for perfection," he said.
Linebacker Thomas Davis (arm), defensive end Jared Allen (foot) and fullback Mike Tolbert (knee) all had full participation.
The tone was set by quarterback Cam Newton, who did his normal routine of sprinting to individual drills after stretching.
Rivera said he counted four mistakes in the 80 plays during the team periods.
"There were some things as far as detail that we needed to clean up," Rivera said. "That will cost you. The game comes down to a matter of mistakes."
But Rivera liked the overall tempo.
"I told them that I thought it was exactly want we needed to do to go out and win a football game,'' Rivera said of how he addressed the team. "I thought the tempo was what we needed."
