ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Two days after releasing safety Nate Allen in what was seen as a cost-cutting move, the Oakland Raiders re-signed him to a one-year deal that is more salary-cap-friendly.
A source told ESPN NFL Insider Field Yates on Saturday that Allen's deal is for $3 million, with $1.85 million of that guaranteed. He also can earn an additional $2 million in incentives, the source said.
Allen, who signed a four-year, $23 million free-agent contract last spring, would have been guaranteed a $4.9 million salary for the 2016 season if he were still on the Raiders' roster on Wednesday.
Originally a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles out of South Florida in 2010, Allen appeared in just five games last season, starting three, after tearing an MCL in the first quarter of the Raiders' season-opening loss to the Cincinnati Bengals.
Allen, 28, was put on short-term injured reserve and played in Week 10 through Week 13 before ending the year on IR. He finished with one interception, two passes defended and 11 tackles.
The Raiders' secondary needs attention this offseason after the retirement of free safety Charles Woodson and with safeties Larry Asante and Taylor Mays scheduled to become unrestricted free agents.
