Senators asking fans to wear red

NHL, Ottawa Senators, New Jersey Devils

The Ottawa Senators will hold a moment of silence for soldier Nathan Cirillo, who was killed in Wednesday's shootings in the Canadian capital, before Saturday's game against the New Jersey Devils.

The team also is asking fans to support the military by wearing red and is planning a special anthem presentation along with two other home teams as the Senators play for the first time since the incident at the War Memorial and Parliament Hill.

"What doesn't break us, makes us stronger," Senators owner Eugene Melnyk said in a statement. "Today our country stands more united than ever and so does the entire NHL family. We are very pleased to join forces with the Montreal Canadiens and the Toronto Maple Leafs in coordinating a unique and special tribute prior our game on Saturday."

Also Saturday, Montreal hosts the New York Rangers, and the Maple Leafs host the Boston Bruins. All games start at 7 p.m. ET.

Cirillo was standing guard at a war memorial when he was shot to death Wednesday, and gunfire then erupted inside Parliament. The city went on lockdown in the aftermath, and the Senators' game that night against the Maple Leafs was postponed to Nov. 9.

Fans on Saturday will go through enhanced security measures. As has been the case for the last couple of seasons, every bag will be opened, but all fans will have to be checked with a metal detector wand. Senators president Cyril Leeder said there will be more of a police presence but did not reveal specifics. The doors will open a half-hour earlier.

"Our leaders are asking us to move forward with the healing process, and we're hoping hockey can help in some small way," Leeder said. "We'll be more vigilant. We have to be aware of what's going on around and us and people coming to the building."
