Blackhawks, Sharks swap forwards

NHL, San Jose Sharks, Chicago Blackhawks

CHICAGO -- The Blackhawks traded forward Ben Smith to the San Jose Sharks for forward Andrew Desjardins on Monday.

The Sharks also received a conditional seventh-round pick in the 2017 draft.

Desjardins, 28, has five goals and three assists and is a minus-2 in 56 games this season. He has a cap hit of $750,000 and is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the season. The Sharks will retain 50 percent of Desjardins' salary.

"He's a feisty player. He's an in-your-face kind of guy. He's a competitive player," Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman said of Desjardins. "... He's a very competitive kid. He's very excited to come in here and play a role. Hopefully it'll work out for both."

Smith, 26, has five goals and four assists and is a minus-1 in 61 games. He signed a two-year, $3 million contract extension in June.

He participated in the Blackhawks' morning skate Monday and was traded shortly after it. He was unavailable for comment.
