Defenseman Hal Gill retires from NHL after 16 seasons

NHL, Boston Bruins, Nashville Predators, Philadelphia Flyers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Montreal Canadiens

TORONTO -- Defenseman Hal Gill has retired from the NHL at age 40 after 16 seasons and a Stanley Cup title.

At 6-foot-7 and 243 pounds, Gill was an imposing presence on the ice and a key part of Pittsburgh's 2009 championship. He also played with Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Nashville and Philadelphia.

He announced his retirement Thursday through the NHL Players' Association. He said he was "thankful to have played for such great organizations" and "lucky to have made amazing friendships throughout my career and live in so many beautiful cities."

He had 36 goals, 148 assists and 962 penalty minutes for his career. His NHL debut came with the Bruins in 1997.

Gill represented the U.S. at five world championships: 2000, 2001, 2004, 2005 and 2006.
