Markell Johnson commits to NC State after 2016 reclassification

Men's College Basketball, North Carolina State Wolfpack

NC State made another late addition to next season's roster on Monday, getting a commitment from ESPN 100 guard Markell Johnson.

Johnson made the announcement via Twitter.

Johnson, a 6-foot-1 guard from East Tech High School (Ohio), was ranked No. 48 in the ESPN 100 for the class of 2017. However, he announced in May that he was exploring a reclassification into 2016, and sources told ESPN that he will indeed enroll at NC State in the fall. He did play on the Nike EYBL circuit this spring, averaging 18.2 points, 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

Johnson had a long list of schools in pursuit for both 2016 and 2017, and recently took a visit to Texas A&M.

Coach Mark Gottfried and the Wolfpack have done a tremendous job this spring of bolstering their roster for next season.

Once down to seven scholarship players due to transfers and departures, NC State added commitments from Turkish star Omer Yurtseven and one-time Mississippi State commit Darius Hicks in May, and then also saw potential all-conference forward Abdul-Malik Abu remove his name from the NBA draft and return to Raleigh.

The addition of Johnson, the latest recruit, provides a talented playmaker alongside five-star guard Dennis Smith Jr., who enrolled in school in January to continue rehabbing from a torn ACL suffered last August.
