Alabama remains No. 1 in Vegas ranks

Alabama and running back Derrick Henry face a stiff test against rival Auburn this weekend in the Iron Bowl. John David Mercer/USA TODAY Sports

After a convincing win against Charleston Southern, Alabama stayed atop the College Football Vegas Rankings alone for the second consecutive week. Alabama is considered two points better than Clemson according to these rankings with the Iron Bowl coming up this week against Auburn. The top four teams are clear based on the point system: Alabama, Clemson, Oklahoma and Baylor, with Michigan State still a point and a half behind Baylor.

The CFB Vegas Rankings are the composite power ratings of a panel of professional handicappers and college football statisticians, including fellow Insider Phil Steele, Brian Edwards and Bruce Marshall of The Gold Sheet. The ratings are intended to weigh the relative strength of the teams if they met on a neutral field and to be compared to the point spread on a given game.

For example, if Alabama and Clemson were to play on a neutral field this week, the Crimson Tide would be considered a 2-point favorite by our ratings.

Here's a look at the 25 best teams in college football right now, according to our panel.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide (49)
Last Week: 1st (50)

Just one game left on the Crimson Tide's schedule before the potential SEC Championship game and bowl season and that is a showdown for the Iron Bowl against Auburn. Alabama is 10-1 SU this season and is now 6-5 ATS after covering against Charleston Southern. Alabama now faces Auburn as a 14-point road favorite.
