When Robinson Cano signed with the Seattle Mariners this offseason, one of the secondary storylines (beyond the money) was how the change in home park would impact Cano's offensive numbers. He was, of course, leaving the short right field porch of Yankee Stadium, and at least subjectively, it certainly seemed like Cano was hooking a lot of those home runs over said porch, a luxury that would not be afforded to him in spacious Safeco Field.
While Cano hit his first home run of the season on Thursday in Arlington, he's hitting .271 with just three extra-base hits in 66 plate appearances. Incredibly, he has hit just seven balls at least 300 feet all season.
While even the very best of hitters struggles over sample sizes this small, Cano's batted-ball profile reveals some interesting early trends that could help to explain some of it: He's not hitting the ball in the air very often, and when he does, he's not turning on it.
